The 11-mile long third lane widening of I-71 in Medina County, Ohio represents the largest contract in the history of the Great Lakes Construction Co. It totaled over $58,000,000. The magnitude of this project utilized many facets of Great Lakes' expertise in heavy civil construction. It should be noted that as the project progressed, nearly every Great Lakes employee worked on this site at one time or another.
The project is part of the Ohio Department of Transportation's master plan to widen I-71 from Columbus to Cleveland.

Great Lakes once again returned to an urban roadway and utility replacement project. The existing roadway and many of its utilities were installed during the 1940s. Great Lakes was given the challenge of removing the underground sanitary and storm sewers, upgrading the existing water distribution system and paving a new 40 foot wide reinforced concrete roadway. During this past winter four key underground crews rapidly completed the underground work, thereby assuring that the completion date was met.

With only weeks left until Christmas, Great Lakes concrete crews completed the final lane placement of the new apron thus ensuring a timely project completion. The 2001 completion date was an integral component of Continental selecting Great Lakes to construct their time critical project.
